I didn’t like this as much as his other novels that I’ve read, but thankfully I’m not done reading Baldwin yet. I have two more novels and a reread of Giovanni’s Room planned.

This novel wasn’t bad, but it took a while to interest me at first. I liked the ending though it was confusing and odd. As an atheist it was interesting to read about religion but after a while it really turned me off. I had to remember, however, that this book is semi-autobiographical and represents some semblance of Baldwin’s childhood and his relationship with his father.

Overall I would say it rates a 4/5

Book 10/40
