Joan Didion is a force- a master of prose, an exquisite goddess of the written word. When she writes, you can feel it. She is the embodiment of literary journalism that swoops in and seduces you.
This collection of her essays during the 1960s and 1970s about politics, culture, California, feminism, life, and etc. was phenomenal. My favorite essays where the first one in the book (“The White Album,” 1968-1978, with the famous first words: We tell ourselves stories in order to live), and one short essay about the Hoover Dam (“At the Dam,” 1970). There will be much more Joan Didion reading soon!
